⚡ Quick Answers
What Your Refrigerator Is Telling You
Freezer is cold but the fridge is warm
Classic evaporator fan motor failure, or an iced-over defrost system choking airflow between the two compartments. Rarely the compressor.
Nothing is cold at all
Start with condenser coils and the start relay. If the compressor isn’t running at all, the relay is cheap and the compressor isn’t.
Running constantly, never stops
Almost always dirty condenser coils in this climate — the cheapest fix on this page. Also check the door seal and, on garage units, the ambient temperature.
Water pooling under the crisper
A clogged defrost drain. The ice slab on the freezer floor is the same fault. Usually a straightforward clear-out.
Frost packed on the back panel
Defrost thermostat, defrost heater or thermistor. The frost builds until it blocks the evaporator and the fresh-food side goes warm.
Hollow or half-formed ice cubes
Water inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, or low water pressure — very common on county well systems rather than city water.
🔬 The Diagnosis
How We Test a Refrigerator That Won’t Cool
In sequence, cheapest and most likely first. The control board is the most expensive part in the machine and the easiest thing to blame, so it gets condemned last — not first.
Condenser coils and airflow
The most common refrigerator fault in Spartanburg, and the cheapest to fix.
Coils sit at the back or underneath, and in this climate they clog fast — dust, pet hair, and a heavy load of spring pine pollen that peaks in April. Blocked coils can’t shed heat, so the compressor runs continuously and the box still drifts warm. Left long enough, that constant running is what kills the compressor.
How we check it: visual inspection, coil temperature, condenser fan operation and ambient conditions around the unit. Typical range: $90–$180.
Evaporator fan motor
The “freezer’s fine, fridge is warm” fault.
The evaporator fan pushes cold air from the freezer compartment across into the fresh-food side. When the motor fails, the freezer keeps working and the refrigerator slowly climbs — which is why so many people assume the whole machine is dying when it isn’t.
How we check it: listen with the door switch depressed, check for obstruction or ice around the fan blade, then test the motor windings. A fan that’s iced solid points at the defrost system rather than the fan itself. Typical range: $180–$350.
Defrost system — thermostat, heater, thermistor
Where a frost-packed back panel comes from.
Every frost-free refrigerator periodically warms its evaporator coils to melt accumulated frost. Three parts make that happen: a defrost thermostat that closes at a set temperature, a defrost heater that does the melting, and on newer machines a thermistor feeding the control board. Any one failing lets ice build until airflow is completely choked.
How we check it: continuity on the thermostat while it’s cold, continuity across the heater element, and resistance on the thermistor against spec. Typical range: $200–$400.
A note on defrosting: if you’ve already melted everything out with a hair dryer before we arrive, tell us — a fully defrosted unit hides the evidence and makes the thermostat harder to test at the temperature it’s supposed to close at.
Defrost drain, inlet valve and leaks
Water on the floor has a short list of causes.
Water under the crisper drawers is nearly always a clogged defrost drain — melt water backs up instead of running to the drip pan. Water at the front or side usually means a cracked water inlet valve or a split supply line, and a cracked valve body often causes the no-ice complaint at the same time.
How we check it: clear and flush the drain, inspect the drain heater where fitted, pressure-test the inlet valve and check the line to the door. Typical range: $150–$300.
Start relay, then compressor
The expensive end — and where honest advice matters most.
If the compressor isn’t running at all, it’s often the start relay rather than the compressor itself. A relay is a modest part; a compressor is a sealed-system job requiring refrigerant recovery and recharge under EPA Section 608 certification.
How we check it: test the relay and overload, listen for the compressor attempting to start, then check for a sealed-system restriction. Relay: $150–$280. Compressor / sealed system: $700–$1,250.
📍 Local Factors
Why Refrigerators Fail Faster in Spartanburg
🌡️ Summer heat and garage units
Highs run through the 80s and low 90s from June into September, and records here have passed 100°F. Most refrigerators are rated for a maximum ambient temperature, and a Spartanburg garage in July goes well past it. Before we condemn a compressor on a garage fridge, we check coils, ambient rating and door seal — sometimes the machine is fine and the location is the fault. Garage fridge guide →
🌲 Spring pollen on the coils
Tree pollen hits the Upstate in March and peaks in April. It settles on condenser coils along with ordinary dust, and by July that layer is the difference between a fridge that cycles normally and one that never stops. A coil clean after pollen season genuinely prevents a summer call.
⚡ Storms and surge damage
Hurricane Helene left 174,694 Duke Energy customers in Spartanburg County without power in September 2024, and ordinary summer thunderstorms do a smaller version every year. After an outage we most often find a surge-damaged control board, a failed start relay, or a compressor that struggled to restart under load. Mention the storm when you call — it changes the test order. Post-outage guide →
💧 Well water and ice makers
City water is soft at around 15 ppm, so scale is rarely the issue inside the city. On wells out toward Inman, Chesnee, Woodruff, Roebuck and along Highway 176, granite bedrock produces hard water and sediment — which shows up first as a slow-filling or hollow-cube ice maker. Hard water guide →
❄️ Coils & compressor
💡 This is what a Spartanburg summer does to condenser coils.
Food safety while you wait
- Keep both doors shut — a closed fridge holds safe temperature about 4 hours
- A full freezer holds roughly 48 hours; half-full about 24
- Perishables above 40°F for more than two hours should be discarded — don’t taste-test
- Bags of ice in the fresh-food section buy real time
🏷️ By Brand
Refrigerator Brands We Service — and the Honest Caveats
Samsung
We repair them and we’re good at them. But on many units the failing relay is embedded in the control board, so the whole board gets replaced instead of a small part — which can push the job toward the price of a new machine. Ice makers in the fresh-food compartment are another known pain point. You’ll get the numbers before committing.
LG
Linear compressors and evaporator fans are the usual suspects. Parts are available and the machines are reasonably serviceable — they sit in the middle of the pack for repair economics.
Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana
Shared parts across the family and wide availability. Usually the best value per repair dollar in this market, and the highest share of one-visit fixes.
GE & GE Profile
Board and sensor faults are common; mechanical parts are straightforward. Older GE units are genuinely repairable and often worth keeping.
Frigidaire
Lower-cost machines, easy to work on, but the replace-instead math arrives sooner on the expensive faults. We’ll tell you where that line sits for your unit.
Built-ins and premium units
Sub-Zero, Thermador, Café and panel-ready built-ins are worth repairing well past the point a builder-grade unit isn’t — replacement usually means cabinetry work too.

⚖️ Repair or replace?
Refrigerators typically last 10–13 years. Our rule: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit and the machine is past half its life, replace it. In practice that means a repair passing roughly $450–$600 on a mid-range fridge is a conversation, not an automatic yes.
Usually worth it: coils, fans, defrost parts, inlet valves, relays, gaskets.
Usually not: a compressor on a low-end unit, a $500 board in a ten-year-old machine,
or a sealed-system leak with rust in the cabinet.
🛡️ Prevention
Five Things That Keep a Spartanburg Refrigerator Running
Vacuum the coils twice a year
Once after pollen season in late spring, once in autumn. Fifteen minutes, free, and it prevents the most common fault we see.
Leave clearance
A few inches at the back and top. A fridge pushed tight into a cabinet recess can’t shed heat, which mimics a failing compressor.
Test the door seal
Close a dollar bill in the door. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is letting warm, humid Upstate air straight in.
Check the settings
37°F fridge, 0°F freezer. People turn them colder when something’s wrong, which just makes the compressor work harder.
Add surge protection
After what Helene did to control boards across this county, a surge protector on the fridge circuit is cheap insurance.
Change the water filter
Every six months. A clogged filter starves the ice maker and gets blamed on the valve.

❓ Questions
Refrigerator Repair — FAQs
🧊 Why is my freezer cold but my fridge warm?
Almost always the evaporator fan motor or an iced-over defrost system blocking airflow between the compartments. The freezer has its own cold source, so it keeps working while the fresh-food side climbs. It’s rarely the compressor, and it’s usually a $180–$400 repair rather than a new machine.
⏳ How long does my food stay safe?
Keep the doors shut. A closed refrigerator holds a safe temperature for roughly 4 hours; a full freezer around 48 hours and a half-full one about 24. Anything perishable above 40°F for more than two hours should be thrown out.
💵 How much does refrigerator repair cost here?
Most refrigerator repairs land between $150 and $400. Coil service runs $90–$180, evaporator fans $180–$350, defrost systems $200–$400. Boards are $300–$600+ and sealed-system work $700–$1,250. You get the exact figure in writing after diagnosis.
⚡ My fridge quit after a storm. Fixable?
Usually. After an outage or nearby strike we most often find a surge-damaged control board, a failed start relay, or a compressor that stalled trying to restart under load — three different repairs at very different prices. Mention the storm when you call.
🔥 Why does my garage fridge keep failing in summer?
Because a Spartanburg garage in July exceeds the ambient temperature most refrigerators are rated for. Before condemning anything we check coils, the unit’s ambient rating and the door seal. Some models simply aren’t built for an uninsulated garage here.
🧃 Why is my ice maker making hollow cubes?
Usually water supply rather than the ice maker — a failing inlet valve, a frozen fill tube, a clogged filter, or low pressure. Low pressure is common on county well systems around Inman, Chesnee and Woodruff.
❄️ Is a compressor repair worth it?
On a mid-range or budget refrigerator, usually not — $700–$1,250 against a machine that may be worth less. On a premium built-in it often is, because replacement involves cabinetry. We’ll tell you which situation you’re in before starting.
🛠️ What can I check before calling?
Three things: vacuum the condenser coils, confirm the outlet is live by plugging something else in, and test the door seal with a dollar bill. If any of those fixes it, you’ve saved a service call.
📅 Can you come today?
Often, depending on where you are and the day’s route. Warm refrigerators get priority over slow-draining dishwashers because of the food clock. Call early for the best chance.
🏠 Do I have to unplug or move the fridge first?
No. Just clear a path and, if it’s already warm, move what you can into a cooler. We’ll pull the unit, protect the floor, and push it back level when we’re done.
