Garbage Disposal Repair in Spartanburg, SC
Humming but not turning. Completely dead. Leaking under the sink. Draining slowly whenever the dishwasher runs. We repair and replace garbage disposals in your kitchen β and we’ll tell you when the fix is the reset button and a hex wrench rather than a service call.
That’s not a throwaway line. A humming disposal is jammed far more often than it’s dead, and the fix takes two minutes.

β‘ Quick Answers
What Your Disposal Is Telling You
Humming but not turning
Jammed flywheel. The motor is getting power but can’t rotate. Free to fix with the hex wrench that came with the unit β instructions below.
Completely dead, no sound
Tripped reset button on the underside, a tripped breaker, or a burnt-out motor. Press the reset first, always.
Leaking under the sink
Where it leaks tells us what failed: the top means the sink flange, the side means the dishwasher or drain connection, the bottom means the motor seal.
Slow drain when the dishwasher runs
The dishwasher drains through the disposal on most installs. A blocked inlet or a full chamber backs both up.
Very loud or rattling
Something metal in the chamber, or worn impellers. Cut power at the wall switch before you look inside.
Bad smell that won’t clear
Debris trapped under the splash guard. Almost never a mechanical fault, and usually a cleaning job.
π§ Try This First
The Two-Minute Fix That Solves Most Humming Disposals
We’d rather you fixed this yourself than paid us to do it. It genuinely works most of the time.
Cut the power
Switch it off at the wall and, if you’re unsure, at the breaker too. Never put a hand into the chamber with power available β not even to “just feel around.”
Turn the flywheel
There’s a hex socket in the centre of the underside. Insert the little wrench that came with the unit (or a 1/4″ Allen key) and work it back and forth until it turns freely. You’ll usually feel the jam release.
Press the reset
A small red button on the underside. Press it firmly, restore power, run cold water, and switch on. If it runs, you’re done β and you’ve saved a service call.
π¬ The Diagnosis
What We Find When It Isn’t Just a Jam
Leaks β and what the location tells us
Three sources, three different repairs.
Leaking from the top means the sink flange seal has failed β the plumber’s putty or gasket where the unit meets the sink. Leaking from the side is the dishwasher inlet hose or the drain elbow gasket. Leaking from the bottom is the internal motor seal, and that one is terminal: a disposal leaking from the base gets replaced, not repaired.
Flange or connection reseal: $150β$280. Full replacement: $200β$400.
Motor, switch and wiring
Dead with no hum at all.
If pressing reset does nothing and the breaker is on, we test the wall switch, the outlet under the sink and the unit itself. A fair number of “dead disposals” turn out to be a failed switch or a loose connection in the box β which is a much cheaper outcome than a new unit.
Typical range: $140β$280.
The dishwasher connection β the fault nobody expects
Two appliances, one blockage.
On most Spartanburg kitchens the dishwasher drains into the disposal. Two things go wrong there. First, the knockout plug: a new disposal ships with that inlet sealed, and if the installer didn’t punch it out, the dishwasher can never drain. Second, a clogged inlet or a full chamber backs water into the dishwasher, so people report a dishwasher fault when the disposal is the cause.
Typical range: $150β$280. Dishwasher repair β
Worn grind ring, impellers and replacement
When the unit has simply run out of life.
Disposals typically last 8β12 years. Toward the end the grind ring corrodes and the impellers wear, so it takes longer to clear a load and jams more often. Individual internal parts aren’t economically replaceable on most household units β at that point a new disposal fitted is the sensible move, and it’s a straightforward job.
Replacement fitted: $200β$400 depending on the unit.
π Local Factors
Disposals in Spartanburg Kitchens
ποΈ Older plumbing in older neighborhoods
The median city home was built in 1968, with about 12% predating 1940. In Converse Heights, Hampton Heights, Beaumont Village and Arcadia we regularly find disposals fitted to drain lines that were never designed for them, plus under-sink outlets added later without a dedicated circuit.
π¨ Remodels and new installs
Every kitchen remodel and new build is a chance for the knockout plug to be left in. With thousands of homes built in the last decade in Boiling Springs, Moore, Lyman and Duncan, it’s a fault we see more often than it should exist.
π₯ What actually kills them here
Not the food people expect. Fibrous vegetable waste, grease poured down warm, coffee grounds and eggshells build up in the chamber and the trap. Grease is the worst of it β it solidifies in the drain line downstream and the disposal gets blamed.
π§ Well water and the trap
On county wells with hard water, mineral deposits accumulate faster in the disposal chamber and the P-trap below it β which shows up as slow drainage long before the unit itself fails.
π Under-sink inspectionπ§ Where it leaks tells us what failed β top, side or bottom.
Keep these out of the disposal
- Grease and cooking oil β the number one cause of downstream clogs
- Coffee grounds and eggshells
- Fibrous waste: celery, corn husks, onion skins, artichokes
- Rice and pasta, which swell after the fact
- Bones, fruit pits and anything metal

βοΈ Repair or replace?
Disposals last 8β12 years. Jams, switches, flanges and drain connections are all worth repairing at any age. A leak from the bottom of the housing is not β that’s the motor seal, and a replacement is both cheaper and more sensible than chasing it. If a unit is over ten years old and jamming repeatedly, replacement usually ends the pattern.

β Questions
Garbage Disposal Repair β FAQs
π My disposal hums but won’t turn. Is it dead?
Usually not β it’s jammed. Cut the power, use the hex wrench in the socket underneath to work the flywheel back and forth until it turns freely, then press the red reset button. That fixes most humming disposals in about two minutes.
π It’s completely dead. What first?
Press the reset button on the underside, then check the breaker. If both are fine, the wall switch or the under-sink outlet is the next suspect β a failed switch is much cheaper than a new unit.
π§ It’s leaking. Can it be repaired?
Depends where. Leaking at the top is the sink flange seal and is repairable. Leaking at the side is the dishwasher inlet or drain elbow, also repairable. Leaking from the bottom is the motor seal, and that unit needs replacing.
π½οΈ My dishwasher backs up when the disposal is full. Why?
Because the dishwasher drains through the disposal on most installs. Run the disposal before starting the dishwasher. If it still backs up, the inlet may be clogged β or on a newly installed disposal, the knockout plug may never have been removed.
π§ Does putting ice down the disposal sharpen the blades?
Disposals don’t have blades β they have blunt impellers that fling waste against a grind ring. Ice does help dislodge debris from the chamber, so it’s not useless, but nothing is being sharpened.
π How do I get rid of the smell?
Debris trapped under the rubber splash guard is nearly always the source. Lift the flaps and scrub the underside, then run cold water with citrus peel or ice. It’s a cleaning job rather than a repair.
βοΈ Repair or replace?
Jams, switches, flanges and drain connections are worth repairing at any age. A bottom leak or a unit over ten years old that jams repeatedly is better replaced β fitted, that runs $200β$400.
π οΈ Do you install new disposals?
Yes, and we’ll make sure the knockout plug is removed if a dishwasher is connected, that the drain elbow seals properly, and that the unit is mounted square. Those three details cause most of the follow-up calls we see on other people’s installs.
