🏘️ Knowing the Area
From Groce’s Stop to a Growing Town
Before it was Lyman, this was a farming stop called Groce’s, named for the family whose general store opened here in the 1870s. Everything changed in 1923, when Pacific Mills chose the spot for its largest textile plant yet — the biggest investment Spartanburg County had seen up to that point. The company built a whole model village: 375 houses, a community center and a twelve-room school.
Those houses were ahead of their time. Pacific Mills laid water mains and sewer lines under the streets, so mill families had indoor plumbing at a time when that was rare in South Carolina. The town took its name from Arthur T. Lyman, the company’s president, and incorporated in 1954 — the same year the plant was sold to Burlington Industries. The mills themselves eventually closed and were torn down, but the village they built is still home to a lot of Lyman families.
Today the town covers a little over four square miles, counted 6,173 residents in 2020, and borders Duncan along the Middle Tyger River. Its own slogan sums it up: small town charm, big city services.

🏚️ Older Homes
What Mill-Village Houses Need From an Appliance Repair
Houses built nearly a century ago weren’t designed for a modern washer, a high-capacity dryer and a refrigerator with an ice maker running at once. That shows up in a few predictable ways.
Three-prong dryer outlets
Older homes often still have three-prong dryer receptacles. New dryers ship ready for four-prong, so the cord or the outlet setup needs attention whenever a dryer is replaced. 3-prong to 4-prong conversion →
Circuits doing too much
Kitchens in older houses sometimes run a fridge and a microwave on a circuit that wasn’t meant for both. Intermittent faults that look like a failing appliance can really be a stressed circuit.
Long, cramped vent runs
Laundry setups added to older homes often push the dryer vent through a long, bending route. Every bend collects lint, and the dryer ends up taking two cycles to dry a load.
Scorched terminal blocks
Where a dryer’s power cord connects, a loose connection heats up over time. A burning smell or scorch marks at the back of the dryer means stop using it and call.

🔧 Common Calls
The Repairs We Do Most in Lyman
Dryers: no heat, long dry times, burning smells
The most common call in older Lyman homes.
Vents first, then the thermal fuse and element, then the cord and terminal block. In mill-village houses the power side is as likely as the dryer itself. Dryer repair →
Typical range
$120–$300 for most dryer repairs.
Refrigerators running constantly
Coils, seals and fans.
Dirty condenser coils are the most common cause, especially after a spring pollen season. In older kitchens a fridge pushed tight into a narrow nook also can’t shed heat.
Typical range
$90–$180 coil service · $180–$400 fans and defrost.
Newer-home faults on the edge of town
A different set of problems.
In Lyman’s newer subdivisions it’s the usual year-two-to-seven pattern: front-load washer boots, ice makers, and control boards on electronics-heavy machines.
Typical range
$150–$450 for most newer-appliance repairs.
✅ Resident Checklist
A Lyman Homeowner’s Appliance Checklist
- Check your dryer outlet before buying a new dryer — three-prong or four-prong decides what cord you need.
- Look behind the dryer for scorch marks at the cord connection once a year.
- Don’t stack big appliances on one circuit in an older kitchen if you can avoid it.
- Leave breathing room around the fridge — a few inches at the back and top.
- Vacuum the condenser coils after pollen season each spring.
- Get the vent run cleaned if the dryer is taking longer than it used to.

❓ Questions
Lyman Appliance Repair — FAQs
📍 Do you serve Lyman and Startex?
Yes — Lyman, Startex and the wider 29365 area, from the original mill-village streets to the newer subdivisions on the edge of town. It’s usually a 20–30 minute drive from our base.
🏚️ Do you work on older mill-village homes?
Regularly. Many Lyman homes date to the 1920s Pacific Mills village. In those houses we check the outlet, circuit and vent run before blaming the appliance, because older wiring and venting cause a lot of problems that look like a broken machine.
🔌 My new dryer won’t plug into my old outlet. What do I do?
That’s the three-prong versus four-prong mismatch common in older homes. The dryer’s cord can usually be set up to match your outlet safely, and it’s a straightforward part of a visit.
🔥 My dryer smells like it’s burning. Is that serious?
Yes — stop using it and unplug it or cut the breaker. It’s usually lint against the heating element or a scorched terminal block where the cord connects. Call the same day.
📅 Can you come to Lyman the same day?
Often, if you call early. Warm refrigerators and leaks get priority on the day’s route.
💵 Is there a travel charge for Lyman?
No — Lyman is inside our normal working area, and the repair price is written down before any work starts.
⚖️ Is an older appliance worth repairing?
Often, yes. Older machines are frequently simpler and more repairable than new ones. Our rule: if the repair costs more than half a comparable new machine and the appliance is past half its life, replace it — and we’ll tell you which side you’re on.
💧 What water does Lyman use?
Much of the area is served by the SJWD Water District, while some outlying properties are on private wells. Well water can scale dishwashers and clog inlet screens, so let us know which you have.
