Dryer Repair in Spartanburg, SC — In-Home Electric and Gas Service
Runs but won’t heat. Takes two cycles for one load. Squealing, thumping, or a burning smell. We repair electric and gas dryers in your laundry room — and on every call we check the vent run, because the part that failed is usually a symptom of something else.
That matters more than it sounds: nationally, about 2,900 residential dryer fires are reported each year, and failure to clean is the leading cause at 34%.

⚡ Quick Answers
What Your Dryer Is Telling You
Tumbles but produces no heat
Thermal fuse, heating element, or on gas units the igniter and valve coils. We check the vent first, because a blown fuse is usually the vent’s fault.
Takes two cycles to dry one load
Restricted airflow nine times out of ten — a packed vent run, a crushed foil duct behind the machine, or a stuck outside flap.
Squealing or thumping
Worn drum rollers, a failing idler pulley, or a stretched belt. Noisy but rarely urgent — though ignoring it costs more later.
Burning smell
Stop using it. Usually lint against the heating element or a scorched terminal block. This one gets same-day priority.
Won’t start at all
Door switch, start switch, thermal fuse, or a tripped breaker. Half of a 240V breaker can fail and leave the drum turning with no heat.
Shuts off mid-cycle
Overheating from restricted airflow, tripping the thermostat. Again the vent, not the machine.
🔬 The Diagnosis
How We Test a Dryer That Won’t Heat
There’s a reason the vent comes before the parts. Replacing a thermal fuse on a dryer with a packed vent buys you a few weeks and another service call.
The vent run — always first
The root cause behind most of the parts below.
A dryer works by moving heated air through the load and out of the house. Restrict that airflow and three things follow: clothes stay damp, the cabinet overheats, and the safety devices designed to prevent a fire start doing their job — repeatedly.
What we find: lint packed along a long run, crushed foil duct squashed behind the machine, an outside flap stuck shut or blocked by a bird nest, runs longer than code allows in older homes, and occasionally a dryer venting into a crawlspace instead of outside.
Typical range: $100–$200 for a vent clean, often combined with the repair itself. Dryer vent cleaning →
Thermal fuse and thermostats
A symptom, not usually a disease.
The thermal fuse is a one-shot safety device that opens permanently when the dryer overheats. When it blows, the machine typically tumbles with no heat — or on some models won’t start at all. Replacing it without clearing the vent is the most common short-cut in this trade.
How we check it: continuity across the fuse, the cycling thermostat and the high-limit thermostat, plus airflow at the blower. Typical range with vent clearing: $120–$250.
Heating element (electric)
The coil breaks at a predictable spot.
Electric dryers heat with a coiled element inside a housing. The coil breaks — usually at one end — and the circuit opens. We test continuity across the element and also check that it isn’t grounding against the housing, which produces the odd fault where the dryer heats even when it’s switched off.
Typical range: $150–$300.
Igniter, flame sensor and gas valve coils
The gas no-heat chain.
On a gas dryer the sequence is: igniter glows, flame sensor confirms it’s hot enough, valve coils open and gas ignites. A weak igniter that glows but never triggers the coils is one of the most common gas faults, and it looks identical to a “no heat” electrical problem from the outside. Piedmont Natural Gas serves much of this area, so gas dryers are common here.
Typical range: $170–$320.
Drum rollers, idler pulley and belt
Everything you can hear.
Squealing usually means the idler pulley or a dry roller bearing. Thumping means a flat-spotted roller. A drum that won’t turn at all while the motor hums usually means a snapped belt. These get replaced as a set on older machines, because doing one and leaving the others means coming back.
Typical range: $160–$320.
Terminal block, cord and outlet
An older-house problem more than a dryer problem.
Where the power cord lands on the dryer, a loose connection heats up and eventually scorches the terminal block. Half of a failed 240V breaker produces the classic “drum turns, no heat” symptom with nothing actually wrong inside the machine. In older Spartanburg homes we also still find three-prong cords and receptacles that need four-prong conversion.
Typical range: $120–$230. Cord conversion →
📍 Local Factors
Why Dryers Struggle in Spartanburg Homes
🏚️ Old laundry closets, long vent runs
The median city home was built in 1968 and about 12% predate 1940. In Converse Heights, Hampton Heights, Beaumont Village, White’s Mill and Arcadia, laundry areas were added into whatever space existed — which means vent runs that snake through walls, bend more times than they should, and sometimes exceed the length code allows. That’s the real reason a dryer “takes two cycles,” and no new heating element will fix it.
💦 Humidity makes every load longer
Roughly 51 inches of rain a year and long humid summers mean the air a dryer pulls in is already carrying moisture. Cycles run longer, which means more heat cycles, more wear on elements, rollers and belts, and more lint generated per month than the same machine would produce in a dry climate.
🔥 Fire season is fall and winter
Dryer fires peak in fall and winter nationally, and the leading cause is failure to clean — 34% of them. Warning signs are the ones people normalize: a hot laundry room, long dry times, lint around the outside flap, and a faint burning smell. Dryer fire prevention →
⚡ Gas versus electric across the county
Piedmont Natural Gas serves much of Spartanburg, so gas dryers are common in the city and older neighborhoods, while newer builds in Boiling Springs, Moore and Lyman skew electric. Tell us which you have when you call — the parts that ride out on the van are completely different.
🔌 Power connection check
⚡ “Drum turns, no heat” is often half a failed 240V breaker, not the dryer.
Stop using the dryer if you notice
- A burning smell during a cycle
- The cabinet or laundry room getting genuinely hot
- Scorch marks near the cord connection
- The breaker tripping repeatedly
🏷️ By Brand
Dryer Brands We Service
Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid
The most repairable dryers in the market. Elements, rollers, belts and fuses are inexpensive and widely stocked — these machines are worth keeping for a long time.
GE & Frigidaire
Straightforward mechanical designs. Element and thermostat faults are routine and affordable to fix.
Samsung & LG
More electronics, more sensor-driven cycles. Mechanical faults are fine; board-level faults can push the economics toward replacement, and we’ll say so.
Speed Queen
Mechanical controls, minimal electronics, built to be serviced. The machine technicians recommend when someone asks what to buy next.
Stacked and compact units
Common downtown and in student rentals. Access adds labor time for the same part — you’ll know the number before we start.
Gas models, any brand
Igniters, flame sensors and valve coils. Different parts, same six-step process — just tell us it’s gas when you book.

⚖️ Repair or replace?
Dryers typically last 8–12 years, and they’re among the most repair-worthy appliances in the house — the parts are mechanical and affordable. Once a repair passes roughly $300–$450 on an older machine, or when a control board is involved on a unit past eight years, replacement starts winning.
🛡️ Prevention
Six Habits That Prevent Most Dryer Calls
Lint screen every load
Every single load. It takes four seconds and it’s the cheapest fire prevention in your house.
Vent run once a year
More often with pets or a long run. Failure to clean is the leading cause of dryer fires nationally.
Check the outside flap
It should open with airflow and close when idle. Stuck flaps and bird nests are common here in spring.
Replace foil duct with rigid
Flexible foil crushes behind the machine. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct moves far more air and traps less lint.
Don’t overload
An overstuffed drum can’t tumble, so the load takes two cycles and the machine runs hot for twice as long.
Wash the lint screen quarterly
Fabric softener leaves an invisible film that blocks airflow even when the screen looks clean. Warm water and a brush.

❓ Questions
Dryer Repair — FAQs
🔥 Why does my dryer run but not heat?
On electric dryers: a blown thermal fuse, a failed heating element, or half a failed 240V breaker. On gas: the igniter, flame sensor or valve coils. In most cases the underlying cause is a restricted vent that overheated the machine, which is why we check airflow before replacing anything. Full guide →
⏱️ Why does it take two cycles to dry one load?
Airflow, almost always. A packed vent run, a crushed foil duct behind the machine, a stuck outside flap, or a run that’s simply too long — very common in older Spartanburg homes where the laundry closet was fitted into whatever space existed.
🚨 My dryer smells like burning. What do I do?
Stop using it and unplug it or cut the breaker. It’s usually lint against the heating element or a scorched terminal block — both genuine fire risks. Nationally about 2,900 residential dryer fires are reported each year, with failure to clean the leading cause. Call us the same day.
🔊 What’s the squealing noise?
Usually the idler pulley or a dry drum roller bearing. Thumping is more likely a flat-spotted roller. On older machines we replace rollers, pulley and belt as a set — doing one and leaving the rest means coming back.
💨 How often should the vent be cleaned?
Once a year for most households, more often with pets, a large family or a long vent run. Signs you’re overdue: long dry times, a hot laundry room, lint around the outside flap.
⛽ Do you repair gas dryers?
Yes — igniters, flame sensors and gas valve coils. Tell us it’s gas when you book so the right parts come with the technician. If you smell gas right now, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 first.
🔌 My dryer has a three-prong cord. Is that a problem?
Not inherently, but it’s common in older Spartanburg homes and comes up whenever a machine is replaced, since new dryers ship four-prong. We handle the conversion as part of the job when needed.
💵 How much does dryer repair cost?
Most dryer repairs land between $120 and $320. Vent cleaning $100–$200, thermal fuse with vent clearing $120–$250, heating element $150–$300, rollers and belt $160–$320. Boards are the outlier at $300–$600+.
⚖️ Is an older dryer worth repairing?
Usually yes. Dryers are among the most repair-worthy appliances in the house because the parts are mechanical and cheap. A ten-year-old Whirlpool needing an element and rollers is a good repair. The same machine needing a control board is a different conversation.
🛠️ What can I check before calling?
Clean the lint screen, run the dryer and feel for strong airflow at the outside vent flap, and check the breaker — both halves of a 240V breaker, since one can fail and leave the drum turning with no heat.
